Setting The Foundation
Smart Start
What it is
A step-by-step online tool created by the New Zealand government to guide you through pregnancy and your baby’s early years.
Why it matters
It brings together local services, financial support tracking, and milestone checklists tailored to your exact week of pregnancy in one clean place.
Folic Acid & Iodine
What it is
Essential daily nutrients recommended as dietary supplements during the early stages of pregnancy.
Why it matters
Folic acid significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects like spina bifida, while iodine is crucial for your baby’s healthy brain growth and development.
Food Safety
What it is
Clear dietary guidance on which foods are safe to enjoy, require caution, or are best avoided while you are pregnant.
Why it matters
Pregnancy changes your immune system, making you more vulnerable to common bacteria. Knowing which foods are safe ensures you and pēpi stay perfectly nourished and protected.
Protecting Whānau & Pēpi
Avoiding Listeria & Toxoplasmosis
What it is
Targeted food and environmental safety guidelines designed to prevent specific bacterial (Listeria) and parasitic (Toxoplasmosis) infections..
Why it matters
While these infections are rare, they can cause serious complications for a developing baby. Simple adjustments, like eating food piping hot and wearing gloves while gardening, keep your risks incredibly low.
Flu & Whooping Cough Vaccines
What it is
Free, routine immunizations that are highly recommended and completely safe to receive together at the same time during pregnancy.
Why it matters
These shots protect you from severe viral illnesses and allow your body to pass protective antibodies directly to your baby through the placenta, shielding them during their vulnerable first few months of life.
COVID-19 Vaccine
What it is
A recommended immunization available at any stage of pregnancy to safeguard against severe viral respiratory infection.
Why it matters
Pregnancy changes how your body handles respiratory viruses. Staying up to date keeps your lungs and system safe. If possible, it is recommended to leave a two-week buffer before or after your flu and whooping cough shots.
Alcohol & Pregnancy
What it is
Clear health guidance and resources explaining why an alcohol-free pregnancy is the safest choice for a developing baby.
Why it matters
There is no known safe limit or time to drink alcohol during pregnancy. Whatever a mother drinks passes directly to pēpi, and staying alcohol-free completely removes the risk of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
Smoking in Pregnancy
What it is
Practical support, guidance, and cessation resources to help you completely stop or cut down on smoking while pregnant.
Why it matters
Choosing a smoke-free environment ensures your baby gets a clean, full oxygen supply, which drastically reduces the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, and sudden infant death.
Body & Well-being
Oral Health Care
What it is
Essential routines and safety adjustments for looking after your teeth and gums, which can become extra sensitive due to pregnancy hormones.
Why it matters
Good hygiene keeps your gums healthy. Crucial tip: If you experience morning sickness, do not brush your teeth immediately after vomiting, as this rubs stomach acid right into your enamel. Instead, rinse your mouth with water and wait 30 minutes before brushing.
Pelvic Floor Exercises
What it is
Gentle, internal exercises designed to strengthen the basket of muscles that support your bladder, bowel, and uterus.
Why it matters
Keeping these muscles strong prevents bladder leaks during your pregnancy and speeds up your body's natural physical recovery after birth. (Tip: There are great apps you can download to give you fun daily reminders!)
Side Sleeping from 28 Weeks
What it is
An important sleep positioning guide recommended specifically for the third trimester.
Why it matters
From 28 weeks onward, settling to sleep on either side (rather than flat on your back) keeps the full weight of your growing uterus off major blood vessels, ensuring a healthy flow of oxygen and nutrients to your baby.
Routine Clinical Screening
Informed Consent & Screening in Pregnancy
What it is
An introduction to your rights regarding optional antenatal screening tests, which check for genetic variations and conditions like Down syndrome.
Why it matters
Informed consent means you have all the facts before deciding. These screenings are completely your choice. Reviewing this gives you and your whānau the space to talk things over calmly at home before being asked for a decision.
Antenatal Blood Tests
What it is
Standard blood panels offered early in pregnancy to map out your baseline health.
Why it matters
These panels check your blood group, look at your iron levels (to prevent severe fatigue), and check for vital immunities like Rubella or conditions like Hepatitis B.
Anti-D (For Rh-Negative Blood Types)
What it is
A specialized, protective injection offered exclusively to mothers who have a Rhesus (Rh) Negative blood type.
Why it matters
If your blood type is negative and your baby's is positive, your body could naturally create antibodies against the baby's blood. An Anti-D injection safely stops this from happening, fully protecting your current and future pregnancies.
Rubella
(German Measles)
What it is
Understanding your immunity levels against the Rubella virus during pregnancy.
Why it matters
Catching Rubella while pregnant can cause developmental complications for a growing baby. Your routine early blood test checks if your existing immunity is strong enough to keep you safe.
Preparing for Baby's Arrival
Breastfeeding Support
What it is
Practical resources, visual guides, and troubleshooting tips to help you understand how lactation and breastfeeding function.
Why it matters
While a completely natural process, breastfeeding is a brand-new physical skill for both māmā and pēpi. Learning about latching techniques and what to expect before birth builds incredible confidence.
Safe Sleeping (SUDI Prevention)
What it is
Evidence-based guidelines on how to safely arrange your baby's sleeping environment to prevent Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI).
Why it matters
Ensuring your baby always sleeps flat on their back, face up, in their own clear cot or bassinet, completely free of loose blankets, pillows, bumpers, or soft toys, keeps them safe and breathing easily.
